QuikTrip penny and cash rounding policy

QuikTrip gives exact change while it has coins. When it cannot, and no federal or local rule says otherwise, it rounds cash payments down to the nearest five cents. Electronic payments are never rounded.

What QuikTrip does with cash totals

QuikTrip corporate communications manager Aisha Jefferson said in October 2025 that QT would continue giving exact change whenever possible, based on its coin inventory. When that is not possible, “in the absence of any federal or local mandates, we will round down to the nearest level.” Store signs reported in South Carolina in November 2025 read: “Cash transactions may be rounded down to the nearest nickel.”

The phrase “in the absence of any federal or local mandates” matters: QuikTrip tied its round-down approach to there being no rule requiring something else.

Does it vary by state?

QuikTrip has many stores in Arizona (Phoenix, Tucson) and Georgia (Atlanta), the two states where rounding is now mandatory and must be symmetric: Arizona when a seller is not using pennies, and Georgia for all in-person cash totals since July 1, 2026. Given QuikTrip’s own statement, stores in those states may follow the state rule; we have not seen a QuikTrip update. In its other states, including Missouri and Nebraska, rounding is optional, and Oklahoma and Kansas had no law for private sales as of October 31, 2026.

Card vs cash

All electronic payments are processed for the exact transaction amount, with no rounding.
