Notice to customers
Cash totals are rounded to the nearest 5¢
- The U.S. Mint no longer makes pennies, so we round the final cash total, after tax, to the nearest nickel.
- Card, debit and other electronic payments are charged the exact amount.
- Sales tax is calculated on the full price before rounding.
Thank you!
Which states require a sign?
- Arizona requires a notice visible at the point of sale stating that cash transactions are rounded to the nearest five-cent increment pursuant to state law. Choosing Arizona prints that statement word for word.
- Vermont requires anyone who rounds to post the State’s model notice at the point of sale or the entrance. Print the official Vermont notice; our sign works as an extra register card.
- Oregon’s HB 4178 reportedly includes signage duties for those that adopt a rounding policy; we have not verified the final text or any required wording.
- New Jersey has no statute, but its Division of Taxation guidance says rounding must be clearly disclosed before the customer is charged.
Everywhere else a sign is not legally required, but it heads off disputes at the register and shows customers the rounding goes both ways. Post it where people see it before they pay.
Printing tips
- The sign prints on one letter-size page; the controls and site menus are hidden when printing.
- Laminate it or use a sign holder at each register.
- Reprint when your state’s rules change. Connecticut’s rule changes on January 1, 2027 and California’s on July 1, 2027.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a sign to round cash totals?
Only in some states. Arizona and Vermont require a posted notice, and Oregon’s law reportedly includes signage duties. Elsewhere a sign is optional but recommended.
What wording does Arizona require?
The notice must state that cash transactions are rounded to the nearest five-cent increment pursuant to state law, and it must be visible to customers at the point of sale.
Can I write my own sign in Vermont?
Vermont’s Act 128 requires the State’s model notice. Use the official version from the State; you can add your own sign alongside it.
Where should I post the sign?
At each register or point of sale, where customers see it before paying. Vermont also allows the business entrance.
Should the sign mention card payments?
Yes. Telling customers that card and electronic payments are charged the exact amount avoids confusion, and it is true under every state law.
