About Penny Rounding Laws

Penny Rounding Laws is a free, independent reference for the cash-rounding rules that followed the end of penny production in November 2025. It is written for shop owners, cashiers and bookkeepers who need to know what to collect, and for customers who want to know whether a rounded total is fair.

Since early 2026, states have passed their own rounding laws, and they differ on whether rounding is required, how tiny totals are handled, whether a sign is needed and how refunds work. Official notices are scattered across legislature and revenue department sites. This site puts the rules in one place, with a calculator that applies each state’s rule exactly.

Each state entry is checked against the enacted bill text or an official state summary, and every page lists its sources. Where we could not read the final text, the entry is marked as reported. The calculator does all math in whole cents, so there are no floating-point rounding errors.

How we keep this accurate

Every rule on this site is taken from primary sources — federal statute, agency guidance, and official state publications — and each page lists the sources it relies on. When a rule changes, we update the affected pages and the "Updated" date at the top of each page.

Our calculators run entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to us or stored.
