Love’s Travel Stops penny and cash rounding policy
Love’s says that if one of its stores runs out of pennies, all change on cash transactions is adjusted in the customer’s favor, and Love’s covers the difference.
What Love’s does with cash totals
A Love’s spokesperson told Reuters in late 2025: “If one of our stores runs out of pennies, all change on cash transactions will be adjusted in the favor of the customer,” adding that Love’s will cover the difference and calling it a temporary measure while the company works toward a long-term solution.
In October 2025, Nexstar’s KFOR reported that at least 54 Love’s stores were already rounding change up in the customer’s favor. The policy only kicks in at stores that have run out of pennies.

Does it vary by state?
Love’s runs more than 600 locations in 42 states. Rounding in the customer’s favor never charges more than the exact price, and it fits Connecticut’s current round-down-only guidance. It differs from the symmetric rule in Arizona and Georgia, where rounding is mandatory; we have not seen how Love’s handles those states.
Card vs cash
The adjustment applies to change on cash transactions. Card, fleet card and app payments are charged the exact amount.
Tips for customers
- Paying cash at a Love’s that is out of pennies never costs you more.
- Professional drivers paying by fleet card are charged the exact amount.
- If a store rounds your cash total up, point to the company’s stated policy.
