What Aldi does with cash totals

Reported, not confirmed by Aldi. We found no Aldi press statement. The policy below is from in-store signage reported by the Chicago Sun-Times.

A sign at an Aldi store in Chicago’s Albany Park neighborhood, reported in December 2025, said Aldi may be unable to provide pennies as change and that “when pennies aren’t available, change due and refund totals will be rounded up to the nearest five cents.”

Rounding the change up is in the customer’s favor: it has the same effect as rounding the total down to the nearest nickel. The sign also covers refunds, so a cash refund would round up too. Because this comes from a store sign, it is possible practice differs at other locations.

Does it vary by state?

Customer-favor rounding never charges more than the exact price, and it matches Connecticut’s current round-down-only guidance. It differs from the symmetric rule in the mandatory states: Arizona (when a seller is not using pennies) and Georgia require symmetric rounding of cash totals, and California will from July 1, 2027. We have not seen how Aldi handles stores in those states.

Card vs cash

The sign refers to change due on cash purchases. Card, EBT and contactless payments are charged the exact amount.

Tips for customers

Checked against the sources below as of October 31, 2026. Store policies change; if your store does something different, the sign at the register and your receipt are the best guide. Compare other chains on the store policies page, or check a total with the calculator.
